Measuring environmental benchmarks

What would you recommend for benchmarks particularly suited to Milford? They should refer to natural resources, yes, but, in keeping with the long history of “benchmarks,” they should also be able to accommodate a human scale.

interesting piece… some criteria that I’d suggest (for New Haven, specifically, but other towns as well)

    – Recycling rate
    – # of EPA air quality non-compliance days
    – Percentage of renewables in municipal energy portfolio
    – # of residents receiving home energy efficiency audits
    – asthma rate among youth
    – hours that nature centers in city parks (e.g. Trowbridge, West Rock) are open
    – percentage of walk/bike commuters
    – # of trees planted
    – # of people participating in community garden programs
