We understand President Barack Obama’s dilemma. He’s trying to stimulate the economy without worsening the already staggering budget deficit. But historic preservation is the wrong corner to cut.

In its 2010 budget proposal, the White House has proposed eliminating two key historic programs, Save America’s Treasures and Preserve America. The budget for a third program, National Heritage Areas, will be halved. The proposal targets 120 federal programs for reduction or elimination, in the hope of saving an estimated $20 billion.

As at the state and local level, cuts have to come somewhere. But here?
