On today’s 40-year anniversary of the first Earth Day, Americans can rightfully take pride in the nation’s progress on environmental issues, but the sober reality is that much remains to be done.

Strong state and federal action cleaned up rivers and lakes, reduced air pollution and diverted millions of tons of trash from landfills to recycling bins. The days when many of Connecticut’s rivers and streams were the color of the waste being dumped into them are over.
