Rural UConn Is a University in Want of a Town

Nearly a decade after UConn officials and the Town of Mansfield, of which Storrs is a section, began planning the $300 million project, nobody can predict when dirt will fly at the site on Storrs Road.

With more than $5 million invested in the project, however, the developer, LeylandAlliance of Tuxedo Park, N.Y., remains committed and “cautiously optimistic,” said Steve J. Maun, the company’s president. Even in a difficult lending environment, Mr. Maun said, projects in college towns are viewed as relatively safe investments.
