Gov. M. Jodi Rell has asked the federal government to provide more details on its plans to close and move the Plum Island Animal Disease Center and on future uses of the 840-acre island, located in New York waters of Long Island Sound 10 miles from the Connecticut coast.

Rell sent a letter Wednesday to the federal departments of Agriculture, Homeland Security and the General Services Administration, which are in charge of the existing lab and its planned relocation to Manhattan, Kan., as well as closure plans for the existing facility and sale of the island. The new facility is scheduled to open by 2018.
