Environmentalist Terry Blunt dies at 69, protector of special places

Oct 5th, 2010 | By | Category: River

Terry A. Blunt, a West Hatfield resident who worked for decades to protect lands in the Connecticut River Valley from development, died Saturday at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.

Blunt, 69, was known for his fierce commitment to environmental betterment in the Valley and for working behind the scenes to stretch scarce funding and enlist even dubious landowners in the cause of preservation.

“It’s definitely in the thousands of acres that he’s been instrumental in protecting,” said Jennifer Howard, director of the state Department of Conservation and Recreation’s Land Protection Program. “He’s had a huge impact on what the Connecticut Valley looks like. It’s just mind-boggling.”
