Public meeting Monday on Millstone; Some say ‘Close it!’

On Monday the owner of Millstone Power Station will publicly discuss issues affecting the nuclear complex ranging from a proposed tax on power production to environmental monitoring. The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Waterford Town Hall.

The discussion of Senate Bill 1176 is only part of the presentation that will be made by Dominion officials at the meeting, said Ken Holt, a spokesman.

Residents are rallying around an effort that would force the closure of Waterford, Conn.’s Millstone Nuclear Power Plant, which is located just across Long Island Sound.

“You have to see what’s going on in Japan. It’s obvious. You have to shut it down,” resident Jim Hennessey said. “Before I was kind of neutral about nuclear power because there was never any problem, but now it’s just too dangerous.”

“If the tax bill passes that $330 million burden that they are going to place on us will make the station not economically viable,” said Ken Holt, spokesman for Dominion Nuclear Connecticut Inc., a unit of Virginia-based Dominion. “This tax bill would force us to shut down.”
