In the most aggressive step yet to combat the spreading of the plant since its discovery last August, officials spent the afternoon depositing 1,000 weevils in an area covered by the choking vine. It was the last stop of a 10-town tour aimed at reducing mile-a-minute growth by relying on the hardy bugs that feed on it.

In all, 5,000 weevils, which resemble deer ticks, have been dispersed around the state since Monday. It is a joint project among the University of Connecticut, the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station and state Department of Environmental Protection in communities including Bridgeport, North Haven, New Milford, Greenwich and Norwalk.
