Piranha’s cousin hooked in Plymouth | Bristol Press

PLYMOUTH — A mystery fish hooked recently in Lake Winfield is not a piranha as originally thought but a related exotic fish that’s harmless to humans.

The fish was reportedly caught by someone who was alarmed by the prominent set of teeth in its upper jaw and turned it over to police Thursday. Police contacted the Harwinton office of the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

The DEEP commented on Facebook:

This story is a reminder that not only is it illegal, it is simply foolish to release non-native species into our eco-system. They always have the potential to displace native species and can cause severe damage to the environment.
