Scope of Responsibilities:

Serve as the political and legislative strategist for the organization, advocating for sound environmental policies, electing pro-environment candidates, and holding elected officials accountable:  Work with Executive Director and board to develop the political strategy and oversee the strategy’s implementation.

  • Research and help CTLCV engage in selected races for legislative candidates in 2012 and 2014;
  • Collaborate with local, regional and statewide environmental organizations to advocate conservation policy initiatives;
  • Help produce and maximize impact of the Annual Environmental Scorecard;
  • Plan and implement accountability programs to inform voters of the environmental records of their elected officials;
  • Plan and implement voter contact programs in support of environmental policies and candidates;
  • Cultivate an “Environmental Caucus” within the legislature;
  • Organize Mid-session meeting of key committee chairs and environmental groups to review active bills and priorities;
  • Organize periodic meetings with Governor’s staff during and after session;
  • Identify priority initiatives with leadership early in the session as the basis for scorecard;
  • Keep a “watchlist” of issues and evaluate bills as they progress;  increase legislator’s use of the list as a source of information; for decisions on upcoming votes with consistent, planned communication on these bills;
  • Identify and advocate for important priority environmental funding areas;
  • Define and implement a strategy for regular communications between CTLCV and environmental advocates during the legislative session;
  • Continue to develop standards and criteria for endorsement in 2012 in anticipation of the next race for Governor in 2014;
  • Other duties as required.


a.. Direct election campaign experience and knowledge of CT election laws
b.. Experience developing and implementing strategic campaign plans for advocacy efforts
c.. Must be passionate about protecting CT’s environment through the political process;
d.. Experience crafting environmental legislation
e.. Demonstrated relationships with leaders in the CT environmental community
f.. Experience building and leading environmental coalitions;
g.. Demonstrated relationships with legislators and legislative leadership, including direct lobbying experience;
h.. Experience working with state agencies;
i.. Solid understanding of laws governing charitable and political non-profits, including lobbying, campaign finance and compliance issues;
j.. Experience conducting media interviews, press conferences and editorial board meetings;
k.. Excellent written, verbal and electronic communications skills;

Salary and hours are negotiable based on experience
