In Westport, Blumenthal floats plan for Long Island Sound preserve

A “major part” of Long Island Sound would be designated a marine sanctuary and undersea preserve under a proposal announced by U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal during a Sunday meeting of the Friends of Sherwood Island in Westport.

“The idea is, instead of building new pipelines and new means of transporting energy and industrializing the Sound, we would confine that activity to places where it already exists,” Blumenthal said to about 50 people in the Sherwood Island Nature Center, adding that dumping also would be prohibited in the designated area.
