Robert Miller: Preserving the Aspetuck branches

The landscape — the streams and hills and floodplains — was here before people. The hills straddle over the lines on maps, and the rivers flow through them. They know where they should be.

Likewise, they are oblivious to land trusts and conservancy groups. A river’s course may change because of floods and may cut a new channel. A tornado can flatten a forest. They do not care a fig about bylaws and objectives.
