Anxious to stop the downward spiral of the lobster population in Long Island Sound, the government next fall will institute a 12-week ban on lobster fishing from Connecticut to southern Massachusetts.

It’s a more aggressive strategy than minimum-size restrictions that have had no success. But if the waters of Long Island Sound are becoming uninhabitable for the once-abundant crustaceans, temporary fishing bans will not do much to bring back one of the defining industries of our region.
