DEEP Awards Grant to Shoreline Greenway Trail in Madison

Development of this CT Designated Greenway

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) has announced that Connecticut is awarding grant money to support the development of a section of The Shoreline Greenway Trail in Madison, a CT Designated Greenway (2009).  The Shoreline Greenway Trail is planned to take users along Connecticut’s coast from Hammonasset State Park in Madison twenty-five miles to Lighthouse Point on New Haven Harbor.

The Shoreline Greenway Trail, Inc will receive $168,938.00 from the Connecticut Recreational Trails Program (RTP). The funds will be used in collaboration with CT State Parks to both establish the eastern-most trail head for the greenway and connect users to the Hammonasset State Park trail system.

The Shoreline Greenway Trail, Inc. a non-profit organization has been fundraising, educating potential property owners and working on designing, building and maintaining this trail since 2003.   Visit their website at:  The RTP is an assistance program of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration administered through the DEEP.  Recreational Trails Program funds may be used for:

  • Construction of new trails (motorized and non-motorized).
  • Maintenance and restoration of existing recreational trails (motorized and non-motorized).
  • Access to trails by persons with disabilities.
  • Purchase and lease of trail construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Acquisition of land or easements for a trail, or for trail corridors.
  • Operation of educational programs to promote safety and environmental protection as related to recreational trails.
