New Haven Begins Massive “Downtown Crossing” Redevelopment

New Haven’s Route 34 connector — long derided as the “highway to nowhere” — will soon become somewhere.

route-34-iiThe city Friday will mark the start of a massive redevelopment of the 10.5-acre connector area between State Street and the Air Rights Garage, including turning the connector into a boulevard and routing it underground in a tunnel. The city hopes the boulevard will eventually bring workers, residents and visitors to offices, housing, restaurants, shops and parks that would be built above the tunnel, a boost to the city’s economy.
