How to make Connecticut roads safe for pedestrians

Each year since 2008, the Tri-State Transportation Campaign has published a report, Most Dangerous Roads for Walking, using three years of data to map the location of each pedestrian death. Route 1 has been Connecticut’s deadliest road in every report.

ped-crossingFortunately, our roads can be designed, or redesigned, with everyone’s safety in mind. The South Western Regional Planning Agency recommended a number of specific targeted improvements to Route 1, including adjustments to pedestrian crossings … new sidewalks, narrowed travel lanes, and “road diets” to decrease the number of vehicular travel lanes while utilizing the balance of the roadway space for improved pedestrian and bicycle facilities.
