Closed exit on Route 34 in New Haven expected to cause backups

… As people get used to the change, leave earlier, choose a different route or switch to mass transit, traffic gets back to normal. “Typically, I see about two weeks of this behavior that exists and then it dissipates,” said Jim Travers, director of the city Department of Transportation, Traffic and Parking.

Closing Exit 3 is the first piece of the Downtown Crossing Project that will really affect the driving public. The project ultimately will eliminate the highway and create city streets on 11 acres that will reconnect downtown with the Hill neighborhood, including Yale-New Haven Hospital.
