Seven in 10 U.S. citizens believe climate change is real and happening now. Yet most have never even contacted a government official about the issue, let alone volunteered with an environmental organisation or taken other action.

These findings are part of an exploration of Climate Change in the American Mind issued  by the Yale Project on Climate Change Communication.

“They think it’s about polar bears or developing countries, not the United States… not my community, not my friends and family,” Anthony Leiserowitz, director of the Yale Project, told IPS.

  1. RE DePietro says:

Despite increasing evidence of extreme and unusual weather patterns, there are many intelligent “doubting Thomases” out there. Somehow, someone with the highet level of objective perspective, scientifically unbiased, knowledgeable and completely unconnected to any one particular political category,= [liberal vs conservative, Democrat vs Republican], such a person, or entity must be recognized and HEARD loud and clear. Then we might seee increased awareness and involvement by citizenry. It has beeen my experience (as a former teacher and prent) that younger people, mostly ages 8 to 12 or so tend to be most sensitive to the environmental needs and issues afffecting our world. Therefore I would recommend that teacher training institutions as well as in service curriculum programs target this subject and age group in particular.
