An underground main break has poured an unspecified amount of sludge into the Long Island Sound, officials said Monday.

The news prompted the Westchester County Department of Health to warn swimmers and boaters in certain sections near the Sound to avoid contact with the water.

The main break, which took place near Blind Brook, released sludge close to where the Blind Brook empties into the Rye Marina, said Caren Halbfinger, a Health Department spokeswoman.
