With the busway scheduled to start operations in a year and a half, the state is giving the city $500,000 to plan downtown redevelopment to take advantage of economic growth possibilities.
The State Bond Commission authorized the money Friday.
The money will be used partly to study whether the site of the former police headquarters on Columbus Boulevard can be redeveloped for apartments or student housing for Central Connecticut State University.

The State Bond Commission has approved more than $537 million in borrowing to help fund construction and maintenance projects across Connecticut, including state highways, bridges, and rail and transit systems.
