University of Connecticut Praised for Green Efforts

Sep 12th, 2013 | By | Category: General

The University of Connecticut was ranked the greenest campus by Sierra Magazine, in the 7th annual “Coolest Schools” done by the magazine. The survey studies schools’ majors, sustainability programs, construction and other factors to determine which American universities are at the forefront of promoting a greener lifestyle.

To earn its number one spot, the University of Connecticut features more than 600 sustainability-related classes. It cut its water use by 15 percent since 2005 and retrofitted 13 campus buildings, which cut 2,640 annual tons of carbon dioxide out of the school’s carbon footprint. It also promotes local eating; more than one quarter of the food served in the dining halls is harvested within 100 miles, with much of it coming from the campus directly.
