Nov 26th, 2013 | By | Category: Health

This is to announce the availability of an updated Air Quality Guide for Particle Pollution at http://www.epa.gov/airnow/air-quality-guide_pm_2013.pdf. The guide provides information about who is at risk, ways to protect health when particle pollution levels reach the unhealthy range, and ways to reduce particle pollution. This new version contains the following updates to health information:

  • Includes strokes as a health effect
  • Clarifies that teenagers are a sensitive group
  • Includes a statement that research indicates obesity or diabetes may increase risk
  • Mentions new or expectant mothers may want to take precautions to protect their babies health
  • Contains a “Hazardous” category, which may be important for emergency situations such as wildfires.

Also, under the “What Should I Do?” heading in the Air Quality Index chart we have incorporated symptoms to watch for, as well as specific guidance on activity (e.g., a green day is a “great day to be active outside!”)
