Once swollen with sewerage and industrial waste, the river has improved steadily over the past two decades, making it far more suitable for rowing, Dietz said.

A study released by Environment Massachusetts Thursday showed that Massachusetts ranked in fourth lowest in river pollution levels, behind Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Arizona.
