Micro grid power plant at Backus in Norwich will be used for storms, outages

Thirty or more officials from the city, Norwich Public Utilities, The William W. Backus Hospital and the Connecticut Municipal Electric Energy Cooperative gathered at the end of Matlack Road Monday morning had those storms and others in mind.

The event marked the completion of a $9 million, four-unit diesel generation micro grid power plant that will serve Backus and surrounding areas during major storms and power outages.

If there is another big storm or major power outage in Norwich all it takes is a flip of a switch to turn on one of the biggest generators installed in the city.
