Because the Farmington river falls within the Ct River Watershed, shouldn't that be considered before reducing the amount of water that flows to it?
May of 2012, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar designated the Connecticut River and its 7.2 million-acre watershed as part of America's first National Blueway and The Farmington River is within that watershed.
This would also affect the Obama administration's 'America's Great Outdoor initiative'.
Is Silvio O. Conte NFWR (National Fish and wildlife Refuge (fws.gov/r5soc) aware of these changes in the river's watershed usage. Where is his voice? How about The Connecticut River Watershed Council, (ctriver.org), are they directly impacted? If so, where are their voices? How about the Connecticut River paddlers Trail (.org). Are they listening? All these organizations should be up in arms over this change. This change would a have direct impact upon 'America's First Blueway' the Connecticut River. If the powers that be (MDC), can not understand the importance of the river's affect upon our communities, perhaps others impacted should step up and make their voices heard.

I think it's hypocritical and shameless for us to oppose accepting fracking waste in CT if at the same time we let DEEP and the powers that be get away with promoting increased investment in "natural" gas infrastructure as a means to transition away from oil. Both oil and gas are disasters for the environment, and we must move away from both of them as fast as possible. If we were to bear the full cost of exploitation of gas -- which would include managing waste in addition to all the other externalities involved in climate disruption caused by exploitation of such fossil fuels, NONE of which are captured in DEEP's ROI models -- it would be obvious to one and all that we must turn immediately to wind, solar, tides, fuel cells, conservation, fuel efficiency, mass transit and so on. It is unconscionable that we would accept the gas without also accepting responsibility for the toxic waste produced when it's extracted. I will take no comfort in a warm home if it comes at the cost of some Pennsylvanian's or New Yorker's loss of drinking water or rural roads free of huge tanker trucks. Or if it costs my daughter's generation the loss of their future. "Inconvenient" does not begin to describe how awful the truth is.

Wow, this is interesting. Why would the company sell it at such a steep discount. My belief is that because commercial fuel cells rely on natural gas, they are not really hydrogen technology, despite marketing messages. Fracked well decline rates are onerous and the collateral damage is unacceptable to many, including me.

The Obama administration has done nothing substantial for the environment since he got into office. The efforts not are cheap and transparent offerings to and offended environmentalist constituency.
For anyone who believes that removing deer will stop the spread of Lyme Disease, there is a
Star-Ledger article about a recent three-year study conducted by doctors at the University of
Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and published in The Lancet, the prestigious British
Medical Journal. Quote: "The single most significant carrier of Lyme Disease lurks not in
deep dark forests, but in parks, on farms and even in the tall grass of suburban backyards.
That carrier - the one most likely to bring Lyme-infected ticks in contact with human beings -is not the white-tailed deer, but the white-footed mouse according to doctors at UMDNJ.
There is a misconception among most people that deer are the culprit. But no; it's really the mice."

To test the theory, Schutzer and other New Jersey researchers staked out
an area of countryside and measured the number of ticks per square foot. Areas with thick
ground cover (more than ankle-deep) averaged 23 times the tick populations of areas with
sparse or low-lying vegetation.

The reason? Mice need dense ground cover to feel secure. "Mice have three principal
requirements to inhabit an area: variety of food nearby water, and ground cover, which
is extremely important for protection, whereas open space is dangerous," writes Schutzer and colleagues.

The favorite habitat of the deer tick is actually the coats of mice: where mice congregate,
Schutzer explains, so will the ticks which transmit Lyme disease.

Dr. Steven E. Schutzer, UMDNJ, who published the report about ticks in Lancet found that
while deer and mice can both serve as hosts on which ticks harmlessly feed, only the mice can transmit the Lyme disease bacteria to ticks."

The name "deer tick" is a misnomer to begin with. According to a 1994 Lyme Disease Foundation update, there is NO SUCH tick as a “deer” tick. These ticks can also be found on 49 bird species, and at least 30 species of mammal, including chipmunks, grey squirrels, voles, foxes, rabbits, and opossums, and even certain reptiles. In fact, this disease organism (Borrelia burgdorferi) is vectored principally by a hard tick, Ixodes dammini, which
was first found on the Deer Mouse, (Peromyscus maniculatus).

The important issue is that not every tick carries the bacteria that causes Lyme Disease. And, even if the tick is infected, it may not transfer the bacteria. Time is crucial: the longer the tick is attached to your skin, the greater your risk. Researchers estimate that the probability of infection is low during the first couple of hours.

. It is usually the family pets, cats and dogs, that bring ticks into the home.
Products such as Frontline for Dogs and Frontline for Cats help greatly by killing the ticks
without injuring the dogs and cats.

Removing deer will not stop the spread of Lyme Disease!

Biodiversity reductions (which happen when forested landscapes are carved up) caused the white-footed mouse population to increase dramatically, most likely due to the loss of their predators and competitors. A reduction in biodiversity limits other animals that the ticks may feed on. Therefore, if we kill off other wildlife such as deer or foxes, the ticks will then feed mostly on mice, increasing their chances to become infected with Borrelia.

A reduction in biodiversity limits other animals that the ticks may feed on. Therefore, if we kill off other wildlife such as deer or foxes, the ticks will then feed mostly on mice, increasing their chances to become infected with Borrelia.

FYI: When considering nuclear power it may be helpful to get an view from inside the power plant. In military matters we consider both what the generals and politicians are saying and what the troops on the ground are reporting back. There has been little of that in energy discussions. I can offer a profile of what real life is like inside a US nuclear plant in good times, and what it might be like in bad times, based on my years in the industry. I have posted this online free. My novel "Rad Decision" is available at my webpage (or just google the title) with plenty of reader reviews. Lay persons seem to find it both informative and entertaining. The media has shown little interest . (They're too busy, I guess.)

It should be noted that this is not a problem restricted to nuclear plants - the typical fossil-fuel plant also relies on a source of "cool" water as part of its power cycle. Nuclear plants tend to be bigger than fossil units and also run with greater safety margins, so they may be the first affected by higher temperatures, or at least it is more notceable when they are affected.

Prompt action? Neighboring NY State has been deep into their EAB project since 2008. CT DEEP has completely dropped the ball on this ... for years. And a transport ban just in New Haven County? Does anyone really think that EAB jumped from NY missing Fairfield and Litchfield Counties to infest just New Haven County? Wow. And we can't blame the CAES ... with slashed funding and more work than funding would ever support, they are doing heroic work in the face of profound legislative ecological ignorance.
This is so cool. We're so happy when people go out and cover their own environmental news stories. A big thank you to all those who helped write and submit this story, take the photos, and all who went and participated in this event on such an oppressively hot day. I was helping someone move and was unable to go. Luckily most of the work we were doing was inside! Peace to all and thank you again!

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg proposed a few years ago to create an offshore "wind farm" to help make the city greener but quickly scrapped the idea because it was far more economically feasible to just burn fossil fuels to create electricity. Too bad the 217 "… environmentalists, conservationists, clean energy advocates, businesses, and local and state officials" didn't produce a report on whether or not these windfarms would make sense from an economic point of view rather than just from an environmental point of view.

It is already so easy to go from the Stamford Transit Center to the city, it is one of the most walkable urban experiences in CT. Why are we getting into more bonding debt to take away funds for rubber on the road transit Operations for any more construction work There? Oy!

RT34 development is an ecological disaster just waiting to happen. The increased traffic that will flow into this beehive of urban development will be unimaginable. But all that aside, the redirection of non-hospital traffic to slower side streets (by design slower, mind you) will logarithmically increase and intensify the pollution in an area encased by monolithic edifices (modern buildings) that are designed to house people as a beehive would house bees! You have no idea the exhaustive expense spent on efficiency studies and design. These new buildings would make a Tokyo subway train car in rush hour look like a palacial expanse with limitless bounds. The 100 College street development - one single building - will have over 400,000 square feet of efficient office space. There are dozens of other buildings slated to built, albeit not so large, in the vicinity increasing traffic flow. People working at these building will be driving in and out of New Haven daily! Daily! Hundreds and hundreds of them with cars, SUV's and whatever other fossil fuel vehicle available.
