More studies needed on artificial turf fields, EPA says

“Now, finally, the EPA is retracting assuring people of the safety of these fields,” EHHI Executive Director Nancy Alderman said in a news release.

Now, she said, maybe people will finally believe us about the dangers of synthetic turf, even though hundreds of towns have spent millions of dollars installing exactly these kinds of fields for their residents, including children, to play on.

Today, 1,803 voters in Bethany, Orange and Woodbridge went to the polls and rejected a referendum to spend $945,000 installing astroturf at Amity High School. While the turnout was very low by normal election standards, for an off-season referendum, the numbers were higher than many expected.

‘Artificial turf contains carcinogens and toxins’: Study

BACK TO SCHOOL SPECIAL: Synthetic turf fields have been installed at schools across the country, and the findings of a new artificial turf study show that these fields contain chemical carcinogens, neurotoxins, respiratory toxins and skin and eye irritants.

The Synthetic Turf Council says that there are more than 5,500 artificial turf fields installed nationwide.

Due to the growth of this industry and because so many students play on artificial turf, the Connecticut DEP studied potential health effects of the fields and the results are reported on here.
