Asylum Street Merchants: Special Lane For Buses Bad Idea

If a redesign of downtown Hartford’s traffic system creates a bus-only lane down Asylum Street, several prominent retailers and restaurant owners say the buses will be jockeying for space with moving vans — because they’ll leave.

A group of Hartford residents told state Department of Transportation engineers Tuesday that they need to do better when it comes to offering up design concepts for the pedestrian bridge over Flower Street. “I want you to believe in yourself more,” Chris Brown, director of Bike Walk Connecticut, told them.



Hartford Pulls Out Of Flower Street Busway Fight

In an abrupt reversal, the city has dropped all opposition to closing Flower Street to accommodate the New-Britain-to-Hartford busway. Mayor Pedro Segarra’s decision came after weeks of behind-the-scenes negotiations between city officials and aides to Gov. Dannel P.
