IKEA recently announced its plans to install solar energy panels at three more of its locations across the United States, at its stores in Draper, Utah, New Haven, Connecticut and Portland, Oregon.

After IKEA receives the necessary governmental permits, it will install nearly 10,000 solar panels on the three stores, which will have the capacity to generate approximately 3,156 megawatt-hours of electricity each year.

IKEA has been a leader in renewable energy for years. Geek.com reports that IKEA plans to have 80 percent of its power for every store come from a renewable energy source by 2015.

Anstress Farwell, president of the New Haven Urban Design League, said of the old, architecturally iconic Pirelli building that serves as a gateway for those entering New Haven from the south on I-95, “We didn’t save it for it to become an ugly billboard. If you took down the billboards, it would be a lot more handsome and distinctive. It’d be nice to see it rather than raggy advertisements.”

Gail Franco, store manager for Ikea New Haven, said anybody who theorizes “demolition by neglect” is “projecting or making an assumption. When we moved in, we agreed with the city that it wouldn’t be taken down.”
