Heavy rains lead to sewage spills around the state

State officials told Eyewitness News this incident happens when the water flow gets so high, it becomes unmanageable and basically untreatable.

The groundbreaking piece of legislation passed during the 2012 legislative session requires the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) to report Combined Sewer Overflows in the state. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, between 1.8 and 3.5 million Americans become ill from contact with water contaminated by sewage every year. Storms Worsened Sound’s Sewage Problems
