The owners of a Pennsylvania power plant have agreed to stop burning coal in two generating units and to provide $1 million towards environmental mitigation in Connecticut and New Jersey as part of a clean air settlement announced today by Connecticut Atty. General George Jepsen and CT Dept. of Energy and Environmental Protection Commissioner Daniel C. Esty.

Under the rule, 27 states, including New Jersey, must install better pollution control equipment. The EPA says this is the only way those states can meet the federal Clean Air Act, though opponents say it could increase electricity prices and cause layoffs.
