Cancer group calls for FDA crackdown on tanning beds

The American Cancer Society (ACS) is urging federal officials to “impose greater control” over the manufacture and distribution of tanning beds, citing an elevated risk of cancer from their use. “Indoor tanning beds are not safe and not appropriately regulated,” ACS Deputy Chief Medical Officer Len Lichtenfeld, M.D., wrote to Sebelius.

Use of tanning beds linked to skin cancer

A team of researchers from the Yale School of Public Health reported that individuals who used tanning beds at least once are at a 69 percent greater risk of developing basal cell carcinoma, the most common form of skin cancer, before the age of 40.
