West Haven fined for illegal sewage discharges; Will ‘significantly reduce’ illegal discharges.

A major settlement involving federal and state regulators and the City of West Haven will significantly reduce illegal discharges of raw sewage into the environment throughout West Haven from the City’s wastewater collection system.

Under the terms of the settlement, the city will reduce illegal raw sewage overflows from their wastewater collection system, which previously has been discharged to area waterways including New Haven Harbor and the Long Island Sound, in violation of the federal Clean Water Act.

Researchers want to study sea turtle that washed ashore in Milford

The carcass of an endangered leatherback sea turtle has washed ashore on the city’s west end. Researchers from Yale University’s Peabody Museum of Natural History are working to retrieve its skeleton for research. Cause of death may never be known as the body is very decomposed, experts said. Seal soaks up the sun and crowds in West Haven

Sunbathers were scattered across city beaches Wednesday afternoon, but one in particular created quite a commotion that required police attention and got the attention of local and state wildlife officials.

The 150-pound, one-year-old harbor seal beached himself at the water’s edge to take a rest and bask in the warm air. The seal was on the beach by Dawson Avenue and later resurfaced on Lake Street.

The groundbreaking piece of legislation passed during the 2012 legislative session requires the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) to report Combined Sewer Overflows in the state. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, between 1.8 and 3.5 million Americans become ill from contact with water contaminated by sewage every year. Cleaning up the Sound – starting with city sewage overflows

Last week, Save the Sound testified publicly in favor of the New Haven regional sewer authority investing $50 million in sewage treatment plant improvements in New Haven. Part of the environmental justice is providing clean water, safe swimming, and safe boating and clamming for all people, including under served communities like New Haven. By cleaning up New Haven’s harbor, we clean up the entire Sound.

West Haven’s Metro Taxi going green
