Big, bad and silly – so long, Hummer

Perhaps nothing better symbolized the nation's overindulgent, often misguided, credit-backed pre-Great Recession consumerism than the Hummer. Appropriate then that it appears the Hummer will not survive the economic downtown. This is not good news, of course, for those working at Hummer plants in Louisiana and Indiana. Perhaps the plants can be retooled to produce hybrid vehicles – or the coming GM Volt electric car.

More alternative fuels to come out of Connecticut Clean Cities Future Fuels Project

The Connecticut Clean Cities Future Fuels Project had the kick off meeting Feb. 17, 2010, in Hartford.

The Greater New Haven Clean Cities Coalition, Inc. (GNHCCC), together with over 30 partner organizations will develop and implement a state-wide, fuel-neutral effort that will deploy 183 alternative fuel vehicles (AFV) through incremental funding and provide fueling capability for 21 additional fleet vehicles and infrastructure necessary to directly support the vehicle deployments as part of the Connecticut Clean Cities Future Fuels Project.

Also see this story in the Register Citizen about an announcement from Gov. M. Jodi Rell:

The Governor announced today that Connecticut has moved closer to those goals with the newly released preliminary recommendations from her Electric Vehicles Infrastructure Council that is examining ways the state can accommodate electric vehicles (EVs) through public policy, infrastructure and education.

Freddie Fixer Passes | New Haven Independent

His real name was Ed Grant. He pioneered “environmental justice” before anyone invented the phrase.

Ed Grant’s mission took hold in the 1960s. He died on Jan. 1 at the age of 87; the mission will continue.

In that mission, Ed Grant made no distinction between the quest for a clean environment and organizing the grassroots to challenge power.

Bridgeport among EPA's 'Environmental Justice Showcase Communities'

U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lisa P. Jackson announced a national initiative to address environmental justice challenges in 10 communities including Bridgeport, Connecticut. EPA has committed $1 million to this effort over the next two years.

In Bridgeport, EPA will build on work that has already taken place to develop community capacity and engagement, identify a broad network of partnerships, and connect with the goals of the city government. Using this past work as a foundation, EPA plans to work collaboratively with a wide-range of stakeholders to develop projects focused on improving indoor air quality, increasing community capacity for green jobs, increasing recycling rates, and reducing asthma and toxics exposure.
