Study examines how nanoparticles affect marine organisms

Manufactured nanomaterials can be found in such diverse applications as electronics, cosmetics, paints, and even medicines, but their effects on the environment remain largely unknown. In a new laboratory study, scientists have found that saltwater oysters and mussels take up and retain significant amounts of manufactured nanoparticles from seawater in clumps of so-called “marine snow.”

More local nano-news is here ::: While smaller is often better in the field of nanotechnology, where new materials and technologies are created on an atomic and molecular scale, the shrinking state budget has left Yale and University of Connecticut researchers scrambling to find other sources of funding.

Northwestern ready to switch to solar | TCExtra.com

WINSTED — Northwestern Regional High School officials are still waiting to get the green light to flick the switch for a new solar energy system after a strong winter wind storm late last month delayed bringing the system online.

The project, which is being managed by Vermont-based GrowSolar, involved the installation of 3,000 individual solar panels on the district building’s roof.

Gov. M. Jodi Rell today announced the state is dedicating $4.5 million in federal stimulus funds to help homeowners, businesses and nonprofit groups pay for the installation of geothermal heat pump systems, an investment that will lower fuel and electricity bills and promote use of alternative energy. The cost-effective technology harnesses the Earth’s natural thermal energy for heating and cooling.

“This is a wonderful opportunity and incentive for hundreds of ratepayers to boost the use of efficient, natural energy,” Governor Rell said. “Connecticut is a national leader in embracing and promoting greener, cleaner energy. That allows us to create opportunities for new industry, new jobs and a healthier environment.”

The new Geothermal Heat Pump Incentive Program is part of the comprehensive State Energy Plan that has qualified for $38 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA).

Custom Mechanical Services

Custom Mechanical Services says they are excited that the State of Connecticut is allotting $4 million of federal stimulus money to open a grant on geothermal installations. The grant will provide homeowners and commercial/industrial establishments alike, a $2,000 refund per ton of heating capacity. An average home requires about 4 tons of heating capacity. According to CMS, homeowners will be looking at an $8,000 refund on a new geothermal installation. This is in addition to the usual 30-percent federal tax credit that is available for qualifying geothermal heat pumps and high efficiency heating or cooling systems. They recommend visiting ctcleanenergy.com for more information about this program.

Connecticut company involved in federally sponsored geothermal project – Green Inc. Blog – NYTimes.com

Department of Energy will sink $25 million into what is called an “enhanced” or “engineered” geothermal demonstration project in Oregon being developed in part by AltaRock Energy Inc., which recently halted work on a similar venture in California due to drilling problems. The grant — by far the largest on the list — is for the development of the Newberry Project, situated near an Oregon volcano. A joint venture between AltaRock and Connecticut-based Davenport Power, LLC, Newberry will begin as a 30 megawatt test facility that can develop into a 120 megawatt plant within the next two years.

Prep Schools Leading The Way When It Comes To Going Green — Courant.com

SIMSBURY – Westminster School is so confident of its new geothermal system at the new, $34.6 million Armour Academic Center that it didn’t even bother to install a conventional backup boiler. In the winter, heat drawn from the relatively warmer circulating water is used to warm the building. In the summer, the relatively cooler water draws away the heat from the building to provide air conditioning.
