Job: Sell ads to help the environment

We’re a New Haven-based environmental news blog that happens to be the top environmental news blog in the state, and soon the country (with your help).  Environmental Headlines is looking for an experienced ad sales person who is familiar with environmental issues and the environmental scene, or who cam immerse themselves in that scene in order to sell some ads to support the blog. Can you find the lead and close the deal? It seems easy enough to me, but I’m not a sales person. We need a sales professional to bring in the ads so we can expand to other states and do the same thing there.  If you can sell for an environmental website, we want to talk to you. Please e-mail us with your experience and interest. Let’s talk.  E-mail chris@environmentalheadlines.com with “job posting” in the subject line, or call (203) 886-5905 for more information.

AFL-CIO unveils legislative agenda, takes aim at CBIA

HARTFORD — State labor leaders and union-endorsed legislators came out with “guns blazing” Thursday. Though the announced purpose of the press conference in the Legislative Office Building was an unveiling of Connecticut AFL-CIO’s 2010 legislative agenda, the target was often the Connecticut Business & Industry Association.

Sstate Sen. Edith Prague, D-Norwich, chairwoman of the labor committee, said every time a bill comes before her committee that would protect workers “CBIA comes in and beats us up.

State AFL-CIO President John Olsen, Secretary-Treasurer Lori Pelletier noted the irony of green manufacturing — “The clean energy fund gave out $70 million for installation of 1,100 solar panels; 70 percent of the hardware for those solar panels was made overseas,” she said.

Business and labor seeking DEP reform

Citing common frustrations with delays, uncertainty and changing rules at the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), business and labor representatives are working together on recommendations for legislative action this session.

“We’re both hearing from our members that Connecticut is losing jobs and economic development opportunities because DEP’s policies, laws and regulations reflect a 1970s approach in a 21st century economy” says CBIA’s Eric Brown.

Broad Coalition Rallies for Action on Green Jobs, Saving Energy Funds

A broad coalition of environmental advocates and clean energy businesses united with legislative leaders yesterday to call for policies that will get Connecticut residents back to work in good, green jobs.

While some of those policies would require some financial investment, others would require no financial expense at all. In many cases, the no-cost policies call only for planning, cooperation and communication.

Panels vague on green jobs, power – The New Haven Register

HARTFORD — A pair of reports from legislative advisory groups released Monday contain more than three dozen recommendations on how to promote job growth in the energy-efficiency and renewable-power industries.

The reports, however, lack specifics on how the recommendations should be implemented. Those details will be worked out during public hearings over the next several weeks, said Rep. Vickie Nardello, D-Prospect, who is chairwoman of the two advisory groups.

Slow trickle of new ‘green’ jobs a mixed blessing for Connecticut

With the state expected to lose thousands of jobs this year, Zerodraft is hiring. The company, which weatherizes homes to increase energy efficiency, is adding more employees to deal with an increase in business driven by federal grants. Over the next several months, owner Paul Paris Jr. expects to create five new jobs at the Waterford site and as many as eight in a second office, in Norwalk.

Budget precedes green jobs in gov's address | CT News Junkie

Hours after Gov. M. Jodi Rell’s farewell budget address, the Office of Policy and Management released its recommendations (pdf) for which revenue stream it would like to see the state borrow against to find $1.3 billion to balance the state budget.

Its number one recommendation was the state’s Clean Energy and Energy Efficiency Fund.

If the recommendation is adopted, it means the state will be diverting a portion of everyone’s electrical bill to cover the state’s budget deficit instead of dedicating that money to energy efficiency and weatherization efforts—an area where green jobs are being created.

“Without the investments in clean energy technology provided by these funds, Connecticut will no longer be able to make any significant efforts to help families and businesses put money in their pockets by cutting their energy bills,“ Chris Phelps, program director for Environment Connecticut, said Thursday. “Solar, fuel cell, wind and geothermal businesses will no longer be able to call Connecticut home.”

Borrowing money to pay for ongoing expenses is bad policy, just how bad the state General Assembly is now finding out.

Unwilling to make the hard choices in 2009 to balance the budget, Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell and Democrats controlling the General Assembly filled a $1.3 billion hole by “securitizing” the money. This involves finding a state revenue source, with approval of the legislature, to secure a big up-front loan that can pay for current expenses.

A recently-formed Job Growth Roundtable played to a full room today when it announced its recommendations for jump-starting job growth and hiring in Connecticut.

Underscoring the notion that improving our economy must go hand-in-hand with improving our environment, the roundtable wisely suggests focusing on three specific areas: transportation, water and energy.
