More alternative fuels to come out of Connecticut Clean Cities Future Fuels Project

The Connecticut Clean Cities Future Fuels Project had the kick off meeting Feb. 17, 2010, in Hartford.

The Greater New Haven Clean Cities Coalition, Inc. (GNHCCC), together with over 30 partner organizations will develop and implement a state-wide, fuel-neutral effort that will deploy 183 alternative fuel vehicles (AFV) through incremental funding and provide fueling capability for 21 additional fleet vehicles and infrastructure necessary to directly support the vehicle deployments as part of the Connecticut Clean Cities Future Fuels Project.

Also see this story in the Register Citizen about an announcement from Gov. M. Jodi Rell:

The Governor announced today that Connecticut has moved closer to those goals with the newly released preliminary recommendations from her Electric Vehicles Infrastructure Council that is examining ways the state can accommodate electric vehicles (EVs) through public policy, infrastructure and education.

Lynch: Floating LNG terminal ill-conceived | Rhode Island news | projo.com | The Providence Journal

PROVIDENCE — Testifying before a special Senate task force Tuesday, Attorney General Patrick C. Lynch called a proposal for a floating liquefied natural gas terminal in Mount Hope Bay ill-conceived.

Lynch said the project was developed only in a “knee-jerk reaction” to the demise of a proposed facility on the Fall River waterfront. The floating terminal would threaten public safety in Rhode Island and harm the state’s economy, he said. He specifically referred to the projected high cost for state and local authorities to maintain security around 900-foot tankers traveling up Narragansett and Mount Hope bays to supply the terminal.

Yankee Gas Expansion Project Eyes 2011 Completion Date | The Cheshire Herald

A $66 million Yankee Gas expansion project remains in its planning stages, but company officials expect the project to be completed in time for the 2011-2012 heating season.

Last week, the Department of Public Utility Control decommissioned a propane facility for Yankee Gas, but the company is still working on its $66 million expansion plan from Waterbury, through Cheshire and into Wallingford, according to Jeff Tilghman, communication specialist with Yankee Gas. The project will build up capacity in the towns for residential and commercial use, and Cheshire could capitalize on the additional flow of natural gas.

Inside Boston's offshore LNG terminal | NECN Exclusive

(NECN: Peter Howe, on Massachusetts Bay) It’s a crucial — but controversial — energy source New England can’t do without: liquefied natural gas. As controversy rages in Boston about LNG tanker shipments into Boston Harbor, in an NECN exclusive, reporter Peter Howe and videographer Mike Bellwin on Thursday got to be the first journalists aboard a new offshore LNG terminal that keeps fuel deliveries 18 miles offshore.

Calais LNG files papers for terminal – Bangor Daily News

Project at Red Beach to cost up to $1 billion

CALAIS, Maine — Calais LNG has filed a formal application with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to construct and operate a natural gas pipeline and import terminal.

The project, estimated to cost $800 million to $1 billion, is proposed for the Red Beach section of Calais, south of the city, on a 330-acre site that features 2,800 feet of shoreline along the deep-water banks of the St. Croix River and Passamaquoddy Bay. Construction is proposed to be completed in 2014.

Boston Mayor Looks to Block Yemeni Tankers From Entering U.S. Harbor | FOXNews.com

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino is looking to block Yemeni tankers from delivering liquefied natural gas into Boston Harbor next month, The Boston Globe reported Friday.

Menino, who called the deliveries “wrong,” reportedly said Thursday that he is seeking legal assistance to prevent the tankers from entering the harbor — and instead force them to unload away from the city as a security precaution.

Block Island Times – Environmental struggle in Mount Hope Bay

While Block Island residents await a state Supreme Court ruling on the proposed 3-acre Champlin’s Marina expansion in the Great Salt Pond, environmentalists on the mainland are embroiled in a struggle regarding a plan to install a liquefied natural gas (LNG) platform off Narragansett Bay.

Weaver’s Cove Energy, partially owned by Amerada Hess Corporation, has plans to dig up more than 70 acres of the bottom of Mount Hope Bay, an estuary connected to the Narragansett Bay, to erect a platform for the storage of LNG.

LNG plan faces more opposition – BostonHerald.com

A six-year-old fight over a proposed LNG facility in Fall River has flared up once again in southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

The Providence-based Save Our Sound, which is battling the latest plan by energy-giant Hess for a liquefied natural gas terminal in the region, last week launched a media blitz harshly criticizing the prospect of huge LNG tankers steaming up Narragansett Bay to an offshore berth in Mount Hope Bay.

Editorial: Win for energy security | Editorials | projo.com | The Providence Journal

Unwilling to accept a ruling by a federal judge, Rhode Island went to the U.S. Court of Appeals in Boston to try to block the proposed Weaver’s Cove liquefied natural gas facility in Fall River. Now, even the appeals court has told the state that it cannot use legal tricks to undermine energy security for southern New England.

Save The Bay plans campaign to block LNG | projo.com

Save The Bay is poised to begin a high-profile campaign to rally Rhode Islanders against a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal proposed for Mount Hope Bay.

The $12,000-effort will feature advertisements on radio, in Newport and Jamestown newspapers and on billboards on Routes 195 and 24.

The subject of the protest is a plan by Weaver’s Cove Energy, co-owned by Poten & Partners and Amerada Hess Corp., to build a $700-million offloading facility in the middle of the Mount Hope Bay. The company says it would bring cheaper energy to the region.
