Rajendra K. Pachauri, Chair of the Nobel Prize-winning Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), spoke to those attending the Tilde Café at Nellie Greens in Branford Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010.

Climate Change

Pachauri discussed the consumption patterns of the human race and what our growing dependence on fossil fuels has done to the environment and on Earth’s atmosphere.

“The Earth has maintained a climatic balance for a long time,” Pachauri said. Now, with higher concentrations of gases, we have created a blanket that reflects heat back to Earth and “the balance is being disturbed.” This disruption, he said, is resulting in changes in precipitation and increase in extreme weather events.

The 2035 Report

Pachauri wasn’t asked directly about the 2007 report of the IPCC that reported that “Glaciers in the Himalayas are receding faster than in any other part of the world and, if the present rate continues, the likelihood of them disappearing by the year 2035 and perhaps sooner is very high if the Earth keeps warming at the current rate.” But he did begin is address to this Tilde Café speaking about the report.

Exploring Regionalism: Worthy Task Won’t Be Easy – Courant.com

We do not envy state Rep. Brendan Sharkey his new challenge.

Mr. Sharkey, a Democrat from Hamden, has been named to head a blue-ribbon commission charged with finding money-saving efficiencies through regional cooperation. With towns struggling and the state facing a possible $6 billion deficit by 2013, sharing of municipal services can and should be a way to economize.

Ridgefield man runs for Connecticut attorney general

George Jepsen of Barnum Place, a former majority leader of the state Senate, is seeking the Democratic nomination for state attorney general.

“The issues I was known for in the state Senate overlapped heavily with the issues of the office of attorney general,” Mr. Jepsen said. They include “an assault weapons ban, protecting a woman’s right to choose, open space protection, energy issues, consumer protection issues, health care — for instance, reining in HMOs.”

Freddie Fixer Passes | New Haven Independent

His real name was Ed Grant. He pioneered “environmental justice” before anyone invented the phrase.

Ed Grant’s mission took hold in the 1960s. He died on Jan. 1 at the age of 87; the mission will continue.

In that mission, Ed Grant made no distinction between the quest for a clean environment and organizing the grassroots to challenge power.
