US Wind Potential Higher Than Previously Estimated

New wind potential estimates for the lower 48 states based on windNavigator, AWS Truewind’s high-resolution wind resource dataset have been released. The estimates were produced in collaboration with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and they mark the first comprehensive state-level assessment of the onshore wind resource potential since 1993.

Wind Power, Pro And Con – Courant.com

I was pleased to see front-page coverage of wind power in the March 1 Courant ["Turbines Could Tilt Balance Of Power"]. We should take advantage of all the free, clean, renewable power we can.

But a suggestion: Why not use the top floors of downtown buildings, setting baffles and turbines to capture the winds in our urban canyons?

Colebrook Might Be The Future Of Wind Energy In Connecticut – Courant.com

COLEBROOK  – Although few residents seem to realize it yet, this rural town on the eastern edge of the Litchfield hills could well determine the future of wind energy in Connecticut. For the past year, Wind Colebrook LLC has had a 180-foot meteorological tower above the tree line along Route 44, measuring the wind’s speed and constancy to test the feasibility of erecting the state’s first commercial wind farm.

Resident Asks for Alternative Energy Tax Exemption

When resident Jeff Hocking approached officials recently with a request, he didn’t realize he had the distinction of being the first and only person in town to ask for a tax exemption for a wind turbine. Hocking, who owns a large farm off Durham Road, is considering erecting a wind turbine as a way to bring alternative energy to his farm and home.

Chavez Calls for Wind, Nuclear Energy to Boost Electric Grid – BusinessWeek

Feb. 21 (Bloomberg) — Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez called on his government to begin developing wind and nuclear energy generation projects amid a drought threatening to halt hydroelectric plants. The nation now depends on hydroelectric power for more than two-thirds of its energy needs.

Salazar: Feds to help states speed up wind energy – Connecticut Post

BOSTON (AP) — Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar vowed Friday to work closely with Atlantic Coast states to streamline the permitting process for offshore wind energy projects.

Salazar said the federal government must collaborate with the states — which include Maine, Massachusetts, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Rhode Island — to avoid long delays for appropriate projects.

Wind Turbine at New Haven business visible from I-95 - Courant.com

NEW HAVEN – The idea of using wind turbines for energy didn’t occur to the Driscoll brothers when they established Phoenix Press in an old brick factory at the confluence of the Quinnipiac and Mill Rivers in the early 1980s.

But this afternoon at Phoenix Press, workers are installing the three-bladed rotor that will rise 150 feet over the parking lot, the most dramatic visual element of the Driscolls’ new 100-kilowatt wind turbine.

The Driscolls’ wind turbine — mere yards from the water, plainly visible to drivers passing over the Quinnipiac River Bridge along I-95 — is by far the largest of its kind in Connecticut, according to the installer — Alteris Renewables of Wilton.

A Phoenix Press representative told CT Environmental Headlines the turbine will begin churning out the energy in a few weeks.

New England poised to be key wind energy player – Mass High Tech Business News

New England is primed to ride a tailwind of advancements in wind turbines for both small and large systems, with the help of a few high-profile, fast-growing companies. While Europe is still king when it comes to large-scale turbine deployments (thanks to its wind-friendly feed-in tariffs), a combination of regulatory changes and financial incentives is making this region an attractive market for wind turbines on both public and corporate properties — exactly the market several local wind companies are going after.

Optiwind, a 2-year-old Torrington, Conn.-based company, is developing a community-scale wind turbine that looks more like a feed silo than a turbine.

U.S. Wind Energy Industry Installs 10,000MW of Capacity: Breaks All Previous Records

Manufacturing Investment, Jobs Still Lag

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. wind industry broke all previous records by installing nearly 10,000 megawatts (MW) of new generating capacity in 2009 (enough to serve over 2.4 million homes), but still lags in manufacturing, the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) said today in its Q4 report.

These new projects place wind power neck and neck with natural gas ¹ as the leading source of new electricity generation for the country. Together, the two sources account for about 80% of the new capacity added in the country last year.

Connecticut-based printer breaking ground on wind turbine project

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The wind turbine project team at New Haven, Conn.-based printing company, Phoenix Press is set to break ground on a 150-foot wind turbine at 11 a.m. Jan. 21 outside of the company’s historic brick facility at 15 James St. in New Haven on the banks of the Quinnipiac River.

The turbine project, which is being supported with a grant from the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund (CCEF), will be the largest wind turbine project in the state and will provide Phoenix Press with about one-third of their annual energy needs, saving the company around $35,000 a year in utility costs.
